Our Wine Varieties

Sangiovese

Sangiovese is an Italian red grape variety more commonly known due to its association with the Chianti variety. First planted in 1999 on our Belebula Vineyard, Pokolbin Estate embarked on a new path of winemaking, with little to no experience with this variety anywhere else in Australia.

Sangiovese adapts outstandingly well to the climatic conditions at our Belebula vineyard. About a 10 minute drive from Pokolbin Estate Vineyard, Belebula is an elevated site on the side of Thistle Hill located on Hermitage Rd.

Sangiovese is an elegant light-bodied, fruit driven red, displaying subtle berry fruits with a touch of pepper, spice and soft tannins. Aged in American oak, its savoury and semi dry nature pairs with a wide range of foods, including cured meats, cheese and tomato based pizza and pasta dishes. Can cellar up to 10-15 years in ideal conditions.
